The mirror imaging of the colors to the left and right of the one's place helps students to see the mirror imaging in our decimal system. In the picture below, the tens and tenths places are green, the hundreds and hundredths places are red, and the thousands and thousandths places are blue.
Ideas for Use
Roll the dice and arrange them in order from largest to smallest.
Point out to the student that in our numbering system, the decimal marks the one’s place. Place your finger on the green one’s place die to emphasize the point. The places on either side of the one place are “mirror images” of each other.
Note: The colors on the dice make this a very good visual aid for students who are struggling to understand place value.
Idea #1
Roll the dice. Have the student put them in order and correctly write and say the number.
Idea #2
Call out a number and have the student arrange the dice to show that number.
